Networking and finding freelance work usually comes with an annoying little extra called filling out profiles.

Right now I’m on Upwork, bulking up my profile. The other day I added some new, valuable information to my LinkedIn profile. I also just got added to another freelance writing network, that has a long profile I need to fill out.

Last week I spent a good chunk of time filling out my Behance profile, and some applications require you to complete a profile as part of the hiring process.

One more profile and I think I might lose it.

If you do anything online, even if you’re not a freelancer, you’re probably quite familiar with filling out an…

When you think of friendship, what images or words come to mind? You might think of joking, partying, traveling, playing video games, shopping, and all the stereotypical “fun” things, but a true friend goes beyond all the rainbows and sunshine.

I’ve realized this myself during my nearly 32 years on this planet after some tough lessons. I’ve lost several many friends— all of whom I thought would be in my life forever—and often for surprising reasons. From being ghosted after loaning someone money to being cussed out for canceling plans, I’ve experienced some rough endings to a few friendships.

But…

We live in a time where more and more mixed-race people exist, and more and more blended families are coming together in love. I would say I’m part of both of these groups.

My dad is black, and my mom is white, and growing up, race was never a matter of importance in my house—or even after my parents divorced. But outside of my family, I never “belonged” to any group of people because no group of people fully accepted me.

Growing up, plenty of black people told me I was too white, and there were also plenty of white…

I find it ironic that some men want to go to extreme, disturbing lengths like this to prevent their daughters from being a 'thot' or getting with the wrong boys, but they fail to realize that their daughters learn how they should get treated from their fathers! He's clearly raised his daughters to believe their opinions, thoughts, privacy, and life doesn't belong to her. Instead, it's all his property, which can only lead to negative relationship patterns for them in the future if they don't recognize what's happening or get help. This is just appalling and I hate the double standard!

There is a growing trend happening now, and it’s been happening for years. It’s a trend I’m sure you’re already familiar with (although, you may not have realized it yet). It’s the trend of taking your clothes off, snapping a picture, and posting it to Instagram.

I don’t really like this trend, and I’ll tell you why.

First, understand, it’s not just IG “models” and “influencers” who are baring it all. Everyone is getting in on this game but in a sly way. …

I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character. — Martin Luther King Jr.

An unnecessary death

The death of George Floyd was a tragedy in every sense of the word, but it has also been one of the most transformative moments in 21st-century history thus far. People all over the world have come together to fight racism and injustice trying to get some vindication for the innocent life that was lost. …

To most people, their family is sacred, their everything.

All that they do and all that they dream of is usually centered around their family. Whether it’s being able to provide financial support or just spending quality time together, family, for a lot of people, is priority numero uno.

But as I said, that’s most people.

Then there are people like me who belong to the small population that isn’t close with their family at all. I’m not talking about typical family dysfunction or differences. I’m talking not being close.

Dysfunction is the norm when it comes to relationships because…

How I finally came to appreciate my body after years of dieting and obsession

It all started 22 years ago…

When I was 8 years old, I heard my freshly separated parents arguing on the phone. My brothers and I had become accustomed to witnessing their heated exchanges, but this one was different.

My mom was trying to keep her voice down but she wasn’t doing a very good job because I heard her telling my dad that I was not fat. She was passionately trying to explain that I was starting to develop and was upset at his lack of understanding.

As an 8-year-old girl, I had obviously never given any thought to body image or size. I had…
